Essex County Cricket Club is returning to Newham this August Bank Holiday with the Essex Development squad. The county outfit visits Flanders Field in East Ham for the second time in as many years this August Bank Holiday, with the festival set to take place on Monday 28 August 2017.
It follows the success of last year’s festival, which was the most significant cricketing event held in the borough since the 1980s. The squad will participate in a fixture at the home of Newham Cricket Club in a programme that will also include colts and women’s fixtures.
The festival will also include the launch of the Newham Cricket Strategy, which is the result of a partnership between the London Borough of Newham and Essex County Cricket Club. The strategy aims to harness the abundance of local talent and provide opportunities for Newham residents to engage in cricket in all its formats, at all levels and all abilities in the community.
Schedule for the day:
8am – 11am: Newham u15 vs West Ham u15
11am – 2pm: Under 11s’ 10 over competition – open to all boys and girls, just bring some trainers/sports shoes.
11am – 6pm: Essex Development 45-over Challenge Match
2pm: Newham Deputy Mayor Ken Clark: The Newham Cricket Strategy and Newham Colts’ Awards Presentation
2.30pm – 6pm: T20 Essex Women’s XI vs East London Representatives XI (Sponsored by London Borough of Newham)
The venue has had a number of upgrades since the Essex side visited last year. A second cricket square has been in operation this season – used primarily by Newham Cricket Club’s 3XI and colts teams – and a new electronic scoreboard is being unveiled this weekend, with the cricket festival being one of the first events where it will be used.
These developments correspond with what has so far been a fantastic season for Newham Cricket Club. Newham’s 1st XI is currently top of the Essex County League Premier Division in a tight battle for the title with Barking, whilst its second Sunday team (Newham CC2) has secured promotion having won the National Cricket League Division 4 title.
The Club’s Colts also continue to go from strength to strength, promising a bright future for cricket in Newham. Every colt side in Newham Cricket Club has reached the quarter finals in their respective competitions and the under-16s have a semi-final match on the same day as Newham Cricket Festival.
Richard Henchley, Chairman of Newham Cricket Club, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Essex back to Newham for this fantastic festival of cricket. I encourage anyone with an interest in cricket to join us for an event that will truly epitomise the spirit of the game. It will also outline the future of cricket in Newham, the capital of cricket in East London, and we look forward to welcoming the players, coaches and spectators visiting a new-look Flanders this bank holiday.”
